Everyone was so scared that all of the food would disappear that they treated the cashiers and grocery store workers with a mix of reverence and fear. We were valued because without us, there would be no unloading of the grocery truck, no restocking of the shelves, and no purchasing of the items. But on the opposite end of that, customers began to accuse us of stockpiling items that they needed first, since we had first access to the trucks and shelves before the store opened.
